Creative Writing Weekends with Paul Clements
Spring 2011 Burren, County Clare, Ireland

Workshop Dates 2011: May 6-9 | May 20-23 | June 3-6

Inspiring, energizing, stimulating

The Burren writing workshops are based in Ballyvaughan, a beguiling village in the northern part of County Clare. Accommodation is in the comfortable and cosy Hylands Burren Hotel in the centre of the village. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 14.

The four-day workshops run from Friday afternoon until Monday lunchtime. Each day we spend a short time (up to one hour) visiting atmospheric locations within a few miles of Ballyvaughan.

We focus on landscape and topography, make notes, and return to write up our impressions. There is a practical side to the workshops and we make full use of the unique setting maximizing our time. Everyone is encouraged to complete a prose essay or other piece of writing of their choice. No previous experience is necessary, but participants are welcome to bring along any work in progress for reading to the group. We have a fun competitive edge with a prize for the best ‘killer quote’ produced over the weekend.

The workshops are held on selected dates between the end of April and mid-June. This is the best time to be in the Burren especially for the wild flowers and to experience it at its most magical with long clear evenings filled with the interplay of light and music from the pubs carefully selected for evening entertainment. O Lochlainn’s Bar in Ballyvaughan was voted by Insight Guide Ireland the top bar in the country in 2008.
